Over the past several days, the world has watched as Mother Nature blew our minds once again. Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc in ways that no one was expecting, and the Gulf Coast was dealt another dose of gut-wrenching devastation. Seeing my great state (and many others) rally to the aid of Southeast Texas is the perfect example of love on display, and I am more proud to be a Texan today than I have ever been.

To say that Texans are proud to be Texans is an understatement. Texas Pride is unique. It’s a mindset that has transcended generations, whose roots run deep, and it’s a unique part of being a citizen. The establishment of Texas as the 28th state is riddled with many many years of war, bloodshed, and an empirical tug of war. Needless to say, when Texas finally broke free, establishing her identity was of utmost importance to those that called it home.

I think you’d have to live under a rock NOT to know that Texas is called the “Lone Star State”. Not only do we make sure everyone everywhere knows it, but it’s also emblazoned on our State Flag.

This week in my 4th grade classroom, we were learning about the Texas Flag and the symbolism behind each piece of it. I’m embarrassed to admit that I truly didn’t realize everything that stands behind this great flag. Now that I know, I am even more in awe at the what is taking place on our coast.

When the flag was established, it was declared that the 5 points of the Lone Star each possess a characteristic that altogether represent UNITY. These points were meant to further exemplify the “Ideal Texan” :

In addition to the 5 points of the star, each color of the flag carries symbolism as well :

  • RED : Courage
  • WHITE : Purity & Liberty
  • BLUE : Loyalty

How could we possibly expect those values to remain so consistent all these years later? Yet here we are . . . exemplifying each of them with grace and love. Like I said, I have never been more proud to be a Texan. I think our State Song just about says it all :

Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!

Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!

Boldest and grandest, withstanding EV’RY TEST

O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,

Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,

Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,

With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.

Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,

Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!

Mother of heroes, we come your children true,

Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,

That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,

That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

Being Texan is much larger than our land and our borders. It’s a state of mind, a pride that runs deep in the hearts of its citizens. Just as the 5 points of our Lone Star represent, being Texan means UNITY, and come hell or high water, we WILL stand together. #texasstrong
