I originally wrote this as we were embarking on Spring Break, however, as we are now in full summer, it still applies!
As with any break from work, I naturally start thinking about a few things (ah-hem. . . MANY things . . . TOO MANY things) that I would like to focus on to help me really take advantage of the break. However, I find that my “To-Do List” or “Goal Sheet” stresses me out and makes my break become a complete juxtaposition of the word itself! So, whether you are traveling for the whole break, part of the break, or staying home, please do yourself a favor, and BREATHE. Take a deep breath, and just reellllaaaxxx. Life is crazy, and if you let it, your “to do list” (while riddled with good intentions) will just be a stresser and a constant, nagging let down. Try to use this break to LET some things fall off your plate. . . and breathe. This is the verse that came to mind when I was thinking about this week¹s devotional:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
God is fully aware of our struggles and our total exhaustion. As we are running around like chickens with our head’s cut off, going from one place to another, putting out one fire after another, He’s watching . . .and He’s WAITING. He’s waiting on us, with open arms, to come to Him for rest.
Alright, truth bomb: We give SO much of our time to nonsense. So much time is given to things that aren’t filling us up, rather they’re draining us. TV, gossip, random things we feel like we just HAVE to get done, FACEBOOK, social media. I mean, the list goes on and on. How many times do you get on Facebook and leave it feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, and good about yourself?! I mean, maybe if someone just posted all their dirty laundry . . .but how often does that happen?! Even at work- how much JUNK do we place on our own plates that is just nonsense? Yes, we do have expectations that must be met. However, how much do we bring on ourselves? How much time do we give to the things that DO matter? Sometimes we can’t control our situations. Sometimes stress and anxiety and busyness are just inevitable. But all of us have things that we can get rid of. HEY! YOU! You DESERVE a break! Facebook can wait. TV can wait. Trying to look perfect so no one knows all the crap going on in your life . . . CAN WAIT! (Oh yes I did) Let go . . .be real with yourself. Give yourself a BREAK! BREATHE!!!
God’s Word does NOT return void. God is LOVE. And God is TRUTH. His Word tells us to “Come . . . And I will give you rest”. Sooooo, come to Him. Not social media, not your girlfriend at work that will fuel a negative fire, not your sassy pants neighbor who hates her life too, not your momma that might make you feel guilty, not that giant bottle of wine . . . Come. To. HIM! Maybe you don’t reach for your bible all the time- that’s ok! Maybe you just need a positive verse on your home screen. Maybe just take a minute to shoot up a quick prayer. Maybe listen to an uplifting song to take up 3 minutes of your day and remind you that HE is in control. NOT YOU! He’s got you. You can let go. Nothing on this earth is more important than His love. Nothing will sustain you like His loving arms.
Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will NEVER let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22
Did you catch that big word? NEVER. He will NEVER let you be shaken. But, you have to “CAST YOUR CARES” first. Translation- LET IT GO!!!! Give it up, sister! YOU AIN’T PERFECT! So, stop freaking out, stop running yourself ragged. Give yourself permission to take care of yourself. Just sit back, relax, treat yourself, and BREEEAAATTTHHHEEE.
